Almost every spring some birds build a nest somewhere in our yard. Sometimes we watch the nest-making process and hope that all goes well. This year some birds nested in the vines by our front door, not a very hospitable place, and they soon found a better spot. We were surprised, though, when today we found two quails and their thirteen (thirteen!) chicks in our backyard by our garden. They were not happy to have us there, though we didn't get very close, the mama quail hustling her chicks as far away from us as possible and the papa quail squawking at us from the top of the fence.Later during the day, Micaela went out to see them and she saw a snake trying to get to the baby chicks who were so new they could hardly walk. They were rescued just in time!
