Our garden experiment has brought us our first truly awesome corn on the cob. I was around seven when I made my first attempt at growing corn. Papa let me dig up the ground right behind our house and I planted one row of corn in the sandy soil. The corn stalks surprised us all, growing oh-so-tall when very little but creosote and tumbleweed grew in our desert clime. I couldn't wait for harvest time, but Papa kept telling me it wasn't time yet. Finally, the day arrived, and we chopped down the stalks. I was so excited, but there wasn't a single ear of corn to be seen. Not being farmers, we didn't know that we needed to plant more than one row for cross-pollination. But Papa didn't want me to be disappointed and he had tucked in a bag of corn nuts into the leaves of each stalk! We also grew beautiful tomatoes, several varieties of herbs and peppers, and more than enough zucchini. Our carrots, cucumbers, green beans and radishes didn't fare as well as I'd hoped, but with only three weeds the entire summer, I'm not complaining.
