Summer Reading - Make a Wave at Your Library

Here is Tammra at the beginning of story time for the 5-6 year olds, before more than twice as many children arrived. Almost 1500 children signed up this summer - a new record. This week our theme was Make a Wave in the Ocean and we talked about the big blue whale being 100 feet long. We showed them how long 100 feet is with a piece of yarn. We read books about a pouty fish, an ugly fish with no friends, a girl and the sea serpent who appeared in her bathtub and more. I learned from a pop-up book that there were real sea monsters in the oceans during the Mesozoic Era. Who knew? Maybe there really is a Loch Ness Monster. We sang My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean and Down by the Bay. And we made fish out of cupcake liners. I am always amazed at these kids' creativity.

When Tammra read the book Clara and Asha, Eric Rohmann's fanciful new picture book about a girl and her imaginary fish friend, I realized that I had stopped in the middle of the story when I was reading the day before. It made so much more sense to read the entire book!

We decorated the room to be as if we were under the waves with the fish above us. We asked Micaela's dear friend, Lorelle, to make this sea serpent for us.
He has darling face.
